Redbud Spotlight

Every now and then I like to feature an interview with one of our more interesting residents, and this month puts Latisha Washington in the hot seat. For some reason, 'Tisha, as her friends call her, didn't want me to put her lovely ebony-hued face out on the world wide web, so you'll have to settle for this shot of her home. (The flowers by the steps are a nice touch.)

R: Thanks for doing this, Tisha. First off, here's your chance to plug your business. Tell me about your shop.

LW: Thanks, Red. I call it Latisha's Cutting Edge. I do hair, both women and men, manicures, and facial and body waxing. Just about anything you might need to look your best. It's in the Stratton Shopping Plaza just south of town.

R: You want to mention the Redbud Special?

LW: Oh, yeah. I give 10% off to all Redbud residents for all my beauty services.

R: That's great. Well, just about everyone has already heard the story about why you moved here from Chicago, so I'll skip that and ask you some other stuff. So, is there someone special in your life?

LW: Damn, you get right down to it. That's kind of personal isn't it?

R: We're all friends here, aren't we?

LW: Sure, we're friends, you and me, but why I be wanting to put my personal business all out on the world wide web for?

R: I guess you have a point there. So, tell me, were you a little nervous being the only person of color, not counting the Patels who are Indian, moving into Redbud?

LW: Uh, no. Should I been?

R: No! Not at all. Well, there was that Skidmore kid that was experimenting with the white supremacist nonsense, but his folks shipped him out to military school to straighten him out.

LW: Oh, that's comforting. No, I mean, everyone I've met has been really nice. Most seem to go out of their way to make me feel welcome. And it's not the fake white liberal guilt sh*t I would get some time up in the city. It's real.

R: Good. So, what do you like to do for fun?

LW: The usual, I guess. TV, music, just hanging out.

R: What's your favorite show?

LW: Uh... The Chris Rock Show is cool. I try to catch that when it's on.

R: I've never seen that.

LW: It's on HBO on Friday nights. You should check it out.

R: I'm usually up at the Moose Lodge on Friday nights listening to the Markley Brothers. what kind of music to you listen to?

LW: Well, I like TLC, Brandy, and Lauren Hill is my favorite. But since moving down here I've been getting into Faith Hill.

R: I don't know Lauren Hill, are they sisters?

LW: Well, Lauren is... Oh, you mean with each other. Lauren Hill and Faith Hill. No, they're not related.

R: Hm. Let's see, what else? How old are you?

LW: Damn, there you go again. What the hell's the matter with you asking a woman that? Okay, hell, they don't know -- I'm 22, I weigh 110 lbs and I wear a perfect size 7. Happy?

R: You know, as a journalist I can't let you get away with that.

LW: (laughing) A journalist? Give me a break.

R: Okay, I think I've got enough. Thanks for giving me this... whatever.

LW: It was fun, I'll see you later, Red.
